Moving with pets offers particular challenges, as you need to account for their needs during the process as well as your own. With careful planning, this can be cared for without too much of a fuss. We’re going to share a few tips to ensure your furry friends have a stress-free move.
Plan Ahead
As with all other aspects of your move, you should have a plan in place for your pets. If you’re moving abroad, you’ll need a copy of your pet’s vaccination details and health record. You may need documentation of their medical history as well. You may also need to get them a passport, certificate of health, a microchip (if they don’t already have one) or arrange for them to be quarantined. Different countries will have different requirements, so ensure you check what they are well in advance of your move.
Maintain Their Routine
Pets feel most comfortable when they have a routine. During your move, it will help if you can keep to your pet’s mealtimes, walk times and sleep time if possible. A consistent routine helps to reduce any anxieties they may have and reassures them that they’re not being left behind.
Create A Safe Space
Once you’re in the new home, designate an area for your pets. Make sure that it’s quiet and has a place where they can retreat if they’re feeling scared. Cats in particular can be a bit shy in new locations, so they might appreciate having access to an empty box to hide in. Ensure they have access to food, water, toys, a bed and a place to relieve themselves. Check on them regularly during the move and take the time to give them some attention if they seem anxious and in need of interaction.
Monitor Their Behaviour
During the move, you should be keeping an eye on your pets. Some will handle moving better than others. Key signs that they’re feeling anxious include loss of appetite, excessive hiding and out-of-character aggression. If you notice signs which concern you that aren’t improving with time, it wouldn’t hurt to contact a local vet. They may prescribe an anti-anxiety treatment or suggest strategies to help calm them down.
